Gentamicin is an antibiotic of the Aminoglycoside group. Similar to the other antibiotics of this group, Gentamicin binds irreversibly to the 30 S ribosomal subunits inhibiting the protein synthesis thus stopping the growth and division of pathogens.

Gentamicin DS 40 mg/ml solution for injection is indicated for adults, newborns, children and adolescents for short term treatment of serious infections caused by sensitive to gentamicin Gr (-) microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Proteus spp. (indole positive and indole negative), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella- Enterobacter- Serratia spp., Citrobacter spp., Providencia spp. and some sensitive  Gr (+) microorganisms.

  • Severe systemic infections: bacterial septicaemia (including neonatal sepsis and bacterial endocarditis), peritonitis, infections in immunosuppressed patients, patients with tumors, patients with infections from burns
  • Complicated and recurrent infections of the urinary system: urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis, cystopyelitis, pyelonephritis, infections, post nephrolithiasis, prostatitis incl. gonococcal. In case of initial and uncomplicated urinary system infections, gentamicine is administered only when the causative agent is not sensitive to antibiotics with lower nephrotoxicity.
  • Severe respiratory tract infections: severe pneumonias or pneumonia with proven causative agent, exacerbation of mucoviscidose,  bronchiectasis and purulent chronic bronchitis, pleural empyema
  • Central nervous system infections (including meningitis, meningoencephalitis)
  • Ear-nose-throat infections: mastoiditis, otitis media and sinusitis particularly those caused by Gr (-) bacteria (incl. Pseudomonas spp.)
  • Reproductive organ infections incl. adnexitis, gonorrhea, prostatitis, epididymitis
  • Abdominal organ infections (bile duct infections: cholangitis, cholecystitis, empyema of the gall bladder, peritonitis, intraabdominal abscess); complicated abdominal infections  – in combination with metronidazole or clyndamicine
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: infected wounds, abscesses, cellulitis
  • Bone and joint infections: osteomyelitis, septic arthritis
  • Brucelose; felinosis (cat scratch disease); granuloma inguinale ; listeriosis; salmonellosis and shigellosis

For prevention of:

  • Endocarditis caused by streptococci, enterococci, staphylococci
  • Surgical infections in immunocompromised patients and patients in intensive care units

1 ml solution contains as active substance  40 mg Gentamicin sulphate

Method of administration: intramuscular, intravenous.

The individual daily doses for gentamicine are equal in intramuscular and intravenous administration. Prior to initiating gentamicine therapy, it is necessary to assess the kidney function. It must be monitored periodically during the treatment.It is recommended prior to treatment to make a scarification sensitivity test.
