Ethambutol-DS contains the active substance ethambutol hydrochloride. The product is a medicine with pronounced activity against the causative agent of tuberculosis; it exerts bacteriostatic effect with reference to tuberculosis bacteria, and has an early bactericidal effect.
Ethambutol-DS is used in the treatment of active pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis except for ocular and renal tuberculosis, treatment of primary manifestations of tuberculosis infection, chemoprevention of tuberculosis in case of contraindications to the products usually used for the purpose.
It should never be used as monotherapy but only in combination with other tuberculostatics, mostly with isoniazid in all forms of pulmonary tuberculosis.
Each tablet contains 250 mg ethambutol hydrochloride
The dose, duration and method of administration of Ethambutol-DS is determined by your doctor based on your body weight.
Ethambutol-DS tablets are taken through the mouth, regardless of food.
Adults:
- In daily regimens:25 mg/kg weight
- In intermittent regimens 3 times daily:40 mg/kg body weight daily during the first 2 months, and afterwards 15 mg/kg as part of the combination therapy
- In kidney failure the daily dose is reduced in accordance with the creatinine clearance up to 65% of the dose
Children:
The recommended dose in children over 3-months old is on average 20 mg/kg/day (15 to 25 mg/kg/day).
For primary and secondary treatment:
During the first 60 days of treatment, ethambutol should be administered in a single daily oral dose of 25 mg/kg.
Afterwards the dose should be reduced to 15 mg/kg, with the accompanying medicines being used in their recommended doses.
For children under 3 – months old it is not possible to recommend dosage regimens due to the lack of sufficient specific data.
